A high quality two factor authentication is achieved by combining the use of a smart card and the GrIDsure authentication method. Smart cards can store complex passwords, or carry out calculations to prove the possession of a secret, like in challenge-response authentication. The security of user authentication can be increased by using a method in which the shared secret is not transmitted directly.
Aventra has developed a PKI enabled Java applet which is compatible with common industry standards. Instead of a PIN, GrIDsure method can be used to authenticate the user. The applet first produces a challenge, which contains the data for the number grid. The user response is given to the applet, which then runs the authentication algorithm. On successful verification, the appropriate access rights are granted to the user.
